![]() Many countries have banned private ownership of tigers as pets and only allow zoos or wildlife conservation organizations to keep them. These numbers are significantly lower than the global population before humans entered the picture: It is believed that there were over 100,000 tigers on Earth before human population growth pushed them out of their habitats. There is a great deal of variation in estimates of the number of wild tigers because they are difficult to count, but to answer the question how many tigers are left in the world, most sources estimate about 8,000 in captivity. However, efforts are being made to protect these remaining tigers and increase their population. That leaves just six known subspecies still alive today. The Javan tiger has been extinct since the mid-1970s, and the South China tiger is thought to be extinct in the wild and was last seen in the 1970s. Some subspecies are extinct and some are critically endangered. We know that tigers used to be spread all over Asia, but now they are only found in parts of India, China, Russia, Thailand, and the island of Sumatra. To answer the question, how many tigers are left in the world, it’s estimated that there are about 13,000 tigers left in the wild. There are still eight subspecies left in the wild. World Wildlife Foundation and the Global Tiger Initiative have released news that three subspecies of tigers have gone extinct in the wild. ![]()
